France Submits a Press Release in GA 2
For far too long, the agriculture industry in developing countries has struggled, and those countries struggled in turn. Food insecurity, unsustainable farming practices and a lack of focus on green and clean agriculture has plagued the United Nations, but the OO Resolution is looking to pass in conjunction with the Resolution GA/I/2.
If passed, OO would give the UN and many countries direction to achieve sustainable farming that reduces waste and gives notice to the ever worsening climate change, and its effects. To finally aid developing countries, France would like to recognize the hard work of countries like Kuwait, Timor-Leste, Czechia, Greece, Slovenia and all others from a variety of areas of the world on resolution OO.
This resolution represents the thoughts and needs of various countries, including France, and fills several gaps in the needs of developing countries not addressed by other resolutions. Firstly, it emphasizes the need for cooperation amongst developing and developed countries, with a strong emphasis on letting these nations find solutions amongst themselves with the aid and mentorship of developed countries and intermediary organizations to supplement technology and data sharing. This includes comprehensive education initiatives and renewed support for UN bodies that fund developing countries’ agricultural development, such as the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the Food and Agricultural Organization and the World Food Programme.
Secondly, it promotes the change from a linear agricultural model to a circular agricultural model. This model would increase efficiency and sustainability while also reducing waste. Thirdly, it includes important regulations to ensure that this agricultural development is done in a way that does not hinder the goals set forth by the Paris Climate Agreement. Lastly, the OO Resolution calls for financial institutions to establish ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) bonds while taking guidance from preexisting UN Organizations. Combined with the already passed Resolution GA/I/2, the OO Resolution can give direction to the UN and create a better world that is fed and that moves closer to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
