Panama’s Letter to the Editor: Responding to GA1 Press Conference
As Representatives, we are tasked with representing our people, so every day, every hour, every minute and every second we waste, costs lives, especially in the General Assembly First Committee (GA1). As the delegation representing millions of Panamanians, we must stand against this waste of energy that is working paper PP and Sunday evening’s corresponding press conference. The recent proposal modifications according to the press conference will still continue to waste time, including labeling the moon as a UNESCO heritage site in order to achieve demilitarization on a site that, according to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, is already a celestial body that may not be claimed by any one Member State. This effort, with backing of influential Member States, is taking precious time and energy away from not only the topic that is currently being addressed by the committee, which is an active threat to the millions of Panamanians we represent, but is also drawing delegations away from the efforts regarding topic one, reducing space threats through norms, rules and principles of responsible behaviors, the very topic this working paper supposedly addresses. We call on all delegations in GA1 to abandon all work on working paper PP and dedicate that time and energy to what is important to not only this committee, but the very people we are tasked with protecting.
