Norway Submits a Press Release in GA Plenary

Distinguished representatives, colleagues, and friends,

Norway would like to draw your attention to the draft resolution OO, which concerns the health and sustainable use of our oceans. We hope we can count on your vote as we work together on sustainability.

Our oceans and waterways are the beating heart of our planet, regulating climate, sustaining biodiversity and providing food security for billions. Today, we reaffirm the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea as the foundation for ocean governance and welcome progress on the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction.

Instead of political partisan efforts, we need to focus on the scientific truths of our time, and those that are rapidly coming to light as our societies become increasingly advanced. The precautionary principle worked wonders in the past, getting rid of chlorofluorocarbon chemicals which helped to begin repairing the hole in the Ozone layer. Profits over people and the environment we live in must end.

Science and technology will guide us forward through real-time monitoring, data sharing and innovations like satellite systems. We call on technologically and scientifically advanced States to share tools and expertise. Calling on all Member States to invest in training and capacity building for coastal communities.

Our oceans are not a sink into which we may continue to drain all our waste into, never experiencing the consequences of our actions.

Let us commit, together, to bold, cooperative action. The health of our oceans is the health of humanity.

Thank you.
