Sierra Leone Submits a Press Release in Security Council B

In the past few days, United Nations Security Council-B (UNSC-B) has succeeded at adopting a multitude of resolutions in relation to the conflict in Sudan. We first adopted a resolution that instilled a three-month cease fire agreement between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Following the implementation of the ceasefire, two resolutions were passed that provide humanitarian aid to the Sudanese people. We are extremely proud of these resolutions worked on by the body, not just for the substance and results, but for the process in which they were created. The UNSC-B delegates put African voices at the forefront, allowing the African bloc of Sierra Leone, Mozambique and Algeria to not just have a prominent voice but to aid in leading the discussion and developing the resolutions. We specifically would like to praise the delegations of the United States, United Kingdom, the Republic of Korea and Malta for allowing us to be a prominent voice in the drafting of resolution SCB-3. We also would like to praise the delegations of Switzerland and the Russian Federation for reaching out and prioritizing the voices of the three non-permant African members and the African Union in the creation of resolution of SCB-4.

This prioritization of African voices was further proven during the press conference led by the delegation of Switzerland where the Representative of Sierra Leone, representing the UNSC-B African bloc, and a representative of the African Union were invited to be a part of the panel. We cannot praise the delegation of Switzerland enough for how well the press conference was run and how fruitful the dialogue was.

The sentiment of “African solutions for African problems” was not just a hollow sentiment but a true guiding message. The delegation of Sierra Leone could not be more grateful for the actions of our fellow delegates. The future of Sudan, and Africa as a whole, looks brighter each day as the UN continues to prioritize African voices in making African solutions for African problems.
