Holy See Submits a Press Release in IAEA
After this afternoon’s press conference on the draft resolution AA, now resolution IAEA/I/1, the Holy See wishes to put out some more responses to the questions raised.
- As it has stated multiple times, the goal of nuclear security is an incredibly noble one, and one that is certainly worthy of massive amounts of donations from the member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and of the many Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that orbit the United Nations.
- The Holy See questions any nation’s intentions if they do not agree to being transparent with the transport and purpose of nuclear materials; the Holy See takes these rebukes of the position of the Holy See as acts with the intention of ending humanity and disagrees most strongly with any such nation harboring these beliefs.
- The Holy See believes that the people of the world can never be truly free unless all nuclear weapons are removed in a safe manner, in cooperation with all nations with nuclear programs to dismantle all forms of nuclear weapons.
- If the IAEA had the power to dismantle all nuclear weapons and oversee its dismantling, the Holy See would be pushing extraordinarily hard to do so, yet the body does not. The Holy See chooses the path which gets closer to our noble goal of a world free of nuclear weapons.
- The goal of draft resolution AA is to create steps towards nuclear security. One of these steps in the halting the proliferation of nuclear weapons, if the trade and movement of nuclear materials is restricted to peaceful, civilian and strictly energy focused needs.
- The importance of smaller nations, the Holy See being itself a microstate, an observer state of the United Nations, is a large believer of the rights and importance of the smaller nations in the UN.
- The Holy See is quite enthused that draft resolution AA, now IAEA/I/1 before the body, is a collaborative effort, free from the influence of colonial powers who still based upon speeches given and their actions, harbor colonial interests and will likely attempt to strike the more progressive parts of the resolution, that impact their neo-colonial intentions.
- The Holy See acknowledges the fact that this resolution is not fully comprehensive, that is by design: our bloc felt as though it was better to take large steps in a narrow pool to make progress towards the overall solution of the issues before this body. In addition this allows for other parts to be fleshed out by more hyperspecialized blocs instead of the passage of half measures which will only get the body back to square one.
- The Holy See appreciates the fabulous discourse surrounding the issue of topic I, Nuclear Security, and again reiterates its position although it cannot vote, that the body should vote in favor. Not every resolution can be a comprehensive one, it is wiser to take the steps you can, rather than to bite off more than you can chew, and thrust upon the collective, the punishment of setback of progress.
- The Holy See, his holiness the Bishop of Rome, Pope Leo XIV, prays for all delegations regardless of belief, faith, ethnicity, political background, social state or any other basis of discrimination, as the kingdom of heaven welcomes all.
