GA 2 on a Slow Walk to Resolutions

By: Khadra Liban

Amid a steady stream of proposals and ideas, Representatives grow fatigued with the repetitive nature of the disputes over funding inequity, commitment and inclusion. The General Assembly Second Committee moved on to topic two in hopes of finding common ground, but representatives were met with the same inability to consolidate ideas, leaving the room at a standstill. Delegations have expressed frustrations with the unmoderated caucuses and are seeking a more structured approach to debates. Representative Krish Sanwalka of Ecuador said he was hoping to “create a bridge between all nations, instead of scattering.”

Representatives Samantha Li and Ombeline Scrimgeour of the United States are even willing to amend their resolutions to establish global cooperation, looking to accomplish something that is beneficial to the entire Committee. In side conversations and informal huddles, Representatives shared their concerns that this gridlock will continue until the end of the conference, with nothing accomplished. With the atmosphere shifting from collaborative momentum to subtle tensions and blocs failing to maintain cohesion, efforts to restart the negotiations have been met with mixed success. For now, the room remains at a standstill. As agenda items continue in a loop, rehashing of old disputes forces the Committee to wait on a breakthrough that has yet to materialize.
