GA 2 Debates Developmental Gaps
By: Khadra Liban
For developing nations, the benefits of globalization remain distant as promises of shared prosperity fall short. The United Nations General Assembly Second Committee called for reforms to ensure fair trade, sustainable growth and equal participation in global markets. Much of the discussion was directed towards underdevelopment with delegations criticizing current international systems stating it’s actively restricting economic growth. Representative Karshiman Luthra of Ethiopia, who took charge during the session, advocated for “capacity-building and triangular cooperation that actually gives developing nations a voice.”
Water access was identified as a priority for developing nations. Representative Jacob King of Iraq said, “We are looking to work towards a resolution of multinational water sharing that is UN backed and centralized, providing each nation with control over their own systems while simultaneously sharing their information.”
Developed nations are expecting these reforms to be paired with transparency, primarily of funds. Member States from the European Union are considering assistance but are hesitant with logistics about financing these reforms due to the potential for exploitation or dependency. Further action is expected in upcoming sessions, with draft resolutions pushed by the developing nations in response to concerns raised in the session.
