GA 1: Mutual Resolution and Maximum Efficiency
By: MacKenzie Hareland
A mutual resolution is in the works in the General Assembly First Committee. Combining the ideas of draft resolutions QQQ and WW, the new draft resolution will be known as QQ. Representatives sponsoring this resolution hosted a press conference, explaining the efficiency of combining these resolutions to help us further understand why they chose to come together. This included the representatives of Canada, Columbia, El Salvador, Brazil and Syria.
A brief explanation of what this resolution will cover was given by Representative Madyson Meyer of Colombia who said,“WW is focused on protecting women and children, and QQQ emphasizes sharing information and data.”
Representative Steven Ahmad of Panama questioned how WW was going to protect women and children. Representative Eleanor Osmond of Canada said the following, “The first thing that we’re doing is requesting that the Secretary-General prepare a report on the disproportional impact of women to help develop solutions, we can’t do anything if we can’t properly identify problems. It also states to strengthen the response initiatives, and emphasizes the importance of mental and physical health support for the victims.”
Representative Henry Reineke of Syria spoke on the main topics addressed in QQQ, by saying, “Our resolution specifically calls for the registration of physical arms that are being traded and creating audits of tracking routes to monitor the transportation and trade of small arms and light weapons between borders.”
The countries involved in this resolution hope that the combination of these vast ideas will help speed up the voting process for the remainder of GA1.
