BREAKING: Security Council A Faces Crisis in Sudan

Introduction:

  • On 30 November at 9:00 am, a Telegram account linked to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) taking control of the Sudanese Armed Forces’s (SAF) 22nd infantry and 89th brigade within the city of Babanusa and the surrounding area. Amnesty International has issued an emergency statement that expresses their concern for the situation in Babanusa. They call for the international community to support and ensure the safety of those fleeing the area. General Burhan of the SAF made a speech over the radio, accusing the RSF of committing war crimes en masse. General Burhan said, “What kind of alleged government would mutilate, rape and murder its own people? This is a barbaric assault on the innocent people of Sudan. We are encouraged by the Security Council’s most recent resolution and the strong message it sends regarding the acts of terrorism perpetrated by the RSF. We hope it demonstrates to the RSF and its allies how the political tide is turning in the conflict and the eyes of the world.”
  • 11:20 pm, 22 November:
    • The agenda has been set to the crisis in Sudan. A Representative from the United States declared their intention to take action. The Rapid Support Forces have been declared a terrorist organization by the Security Council. A Representative from China, in a statement to the Council, said, “the claim by the United States will go against the resolution that we had passed earlier.”
  • 11:25 pm:
    • The Security Council has voted for Denmark to lead a five minute moderated caucus. The Representative of the Russian Federation called for the saving of the people of Sudan and aid for the refugee crisis. The Representative of Somalia expresses the desire to address the military situation that caused the crisis.
  • 11:32 pm:
    • Denmark moves for a thirty minute suspension of the meeting, which passed. During the suspension of the meeting Representative Andrew Hatch of Panama said, “[The] concern is with how the situation had escalated so rapidly with the RSF, [Rapid Support Forces] just after agreeing with a resolution that was just passed”
