GA Plenary: Collaboration on Resolution CC
By Eleanor Randall
On 24 November 2024, the General Assembly Plenary commenced, and representatives formed like-minded groups focused on developing resolutions to find pathways to a sustainable environment.
Draft Resolution CC is authored by Belarus, Yemen and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. “Some nations are not following their ideals and the Western nations are trying to control nations they have controlled in the past,” said Representative Riley Romer of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Draft Resolution CC encourages developing countries to tackle their own environmental issues instead of other countries getting involved.
The key focus within Draft Resolution CC is limiting green imperialism by changing the way Western countries influence the internal environmental affairs in developing countries. When asked to summarize CC, Representative Mario Prisciandaro of the Syrian Arab Republic said, “[We are] protecting national sovereignty from Green Imperialism.” Developed States will offer monetary funds to developing countries to compensate for sending their waste. That waste is harming developing countries’ environments and further deterring the development and economy of these nations.
Representatives have stated that a strength of this resolution is how broad it is and conflicting States are cooperating to pass this resolution. During the press conference this afternoon, Representatives of both Brazil and Palestine offered their support for Resolution CC.
